The Covenants in Matthew (Part 3) - Class 11

OCTOBER 11, 2026

Speaker: Garrett Bookout

Summary

Join Garrett Bookout for Class 11 of the Oak Hollow church of Christ study on the story of the Bible. This session explores how the Gospel of Matthew connects Jesus to the historical thread of God's promises in the Old Testament. Discover how Jesus entered Jerusalem as a humble king, faced the scrutiny and rejection of religious leaders, and was enthroned through His death and resurrection—giving all believers access to His eternal kingdom.

Description

In this class, Garrett Bookout continues his overarching study of the Bible's story by zooming in on the Gospel of Matthew and how Jesus fulfills the major Old Testament covenants (Abrahamic, Mosaic, and Davidic). Garrett explains how Matthew's gospel presents Jesus as the rightful King and Messiah, tracing this theme from His lineage and birth narratives, through His public ministry, to His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The lesson highlights the central question asked throughout Matthew: *"Who is this?"*—contrasting the crowds who viewed Jesus merely as a prophet with Peter's confession that He is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Ultimately, Jesus' crucifixion under the charge of being "King of the Jews" and His subsequent resurrection culminate in His supreme authority and the Great Commission.

* Pilate questioning Jesus: *"Are you the King of the Jews?"*
* The soldiers mocking Jesus with a crown of thorns, a scarlet robe, and the title "King of the Jews."
* How the crucifixion—intended by opponents to destroy Him—actually served as His ironic enthronement.

5. **The Resurrection and the Great Commission (Matthew 28)**
