A Life with Purpose - Ephesians 5:15-21

MAY 10, 2026

Speaker: Garrett Bookout

Summary

In this practical and reflective sermon, Garrett Bookout explores Ephesians 5:15-21 as a call to intentional, purposeful living. He emphasizes that life is a journey ("walk") that requires careful attention because our daily choices determine where we end up—both in this life and eternity. Using a memorable rope illustration contrasting our brief earthly life with eternity, he challenges listeners to stop living primarily for temporal comfort and instead make the best use of time by being filled with the Holy Spirit. True purpose is found not in self-focus but in other-focused living: heartfelt worship, continual thankfulness, and mutual submission out of reverence for Christ. The message is both convicting and encouraging, especially fitting for Mother’s Day, highlighting lives marked by caring more for others than for self.

Description

"What kind of life do you want to look back on? In this timely message from Ephesians 5:15-21, Garrett Bookout reminds us that every step we take is leading us somewhere. Life is short, eternity is long, and the days are evil—therefore we must walk carefully, redeem the time, and be filled with the Spirit rather than chasing empty pleasures. Through powerful illustrations and transparent reflection on influence in our small circles, Garrett calls the church to live with eternal purpose: worshiping from the heart, giving thanks always, and submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. A meaningful message for anyone wanting their life to count—especially powerful on Mother’s Day."

Outline

**Introduction**
- Personal favorite passage: Ephesians 5:15-21 (consistent answer over 10-15 years of ministry).
- All people want their lives to matter and have purpose.
- As we age, focus often shifts from “changing the world” to positively impacting our immediate circle (family, friends, neighbors, church).
- We must *intend* to live purposefully.

**Main Text: Ephesians 5:15-21**
1. **Walk Carefully / Look Carefully How You Walk (v. 15)**
- “Walk” is a key theme throughout Ephesians (walk in good works, unity, love, light, etc.).
- This command is different: not “walk *in* [something]” but “pay attention to *how* you walk.”
- Life is a journey/path; decisions compound and lead to a destination.
- Analogy: Highway 65 – going north or south takes you to very different places. Get off the wrong road if needed.
- Many are surprised by where they end up because they don’t thoughtfully consider their direction.

2. **Make the Best Use of Time (Redeem the Time), Because the Days Are Evil (v. 16)**
- Foolish people don’t value time; wise people recognize every day matters.
- **Powerful Rope Illustration** (Francis Chan inspired):
- Long rope = eternity (stretches forever).
- Tiny blue segment = our earthly life.
- Most decisions are made only for the tiny visible segment (career, house, car, retirement, comfort).
- But this short life determines our eternity.
- Working hard and providing is good, but living *only* for temporal comfort is not the best use of time.

3. **Understand the Will of the Lord / Do Not Be Foolish (v. 17)**
- Contrast worldly priorities with God’s will.

4. **Be Filled with the Spirit (v. 18)**
- “Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery…”
- What fills you determines who you become and how you live.
- Drunkenness → recklessness and emptiness.
- Spirit-filled life produces something far better.

**How to Be Filled with the Spirit (Practical Outcomes)**
- **Addressing one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart** (v. 19)
→ Heartfelt worship softens the heart and allows the Spirit to work and change us.
- **Giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ** (v. 20)
→ Thankfulness counters greed and discontent.
- **Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ** (v. 21)
→ Leads into household codes (spouses, children, servants).
→ Submission = caring more about others than self (beautiful picture of motherhood).

**Conclusion / Application**
- A life of purpose is **other-focused**, not self-focused.
- To impact those around you, make your life *about* those around you.
- Worship God, serve others, live for eternity rather than temporary comfort.
- Challenge: Live intentionally so that your small circle is better because you are in it.

This sermon balances theological depth with relatable storytelling and practical challenge, making it highly applicable for Christian living in everyday contexts.
